Dizi SizesWhen ordering a Dizi, usually one has to identify the size (big, medium, and small) and the key of the Dizi.There are 2 ways to name a Dizi’s key: The first way is to use the 3rd finger hole’s note (open right hand 3 fingers) as a standard to identify the key of the dizi. Most of the time the key of the dizi is marked on the right side of the 3rd finger hole. (See Fig. 1) The second way to identify the key of that same Dizi is to use the note produced by covering all 6 finger holes. Most of the time the key of the Dizi is marked between the membrane hole and the 6th finger hole, or between the 1st finger hole and the drapes hole (Again, see fig. 1) ![]() These two different methods can make identifying a Dizi's key confusing. Dizi players usually use the 3rd finger hole to identify the key, while Western flute players use covering all 6 finger holes. Below is a chart of Dizi keys and associated sizes.
